What is gum disease care?

Gum disease care treats several types of periodontal disease, including:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis occurs when plaque –– a mixture of food particles, bacteria, and saliva –– collects on your teeth and underneath your gums. This build-up irritates your gums, causing them to become inflamed and recede (pull away from your teeth).

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a more severe infection that eats away at the ligaments and other soft tissues that hold your teeth in place. Without treatment, your teeth can loosen and fall out.

Who should consider gum disease care?

Consider gum disease care at Bayside Dental Arts: Andrey Ilyabayev, DDS, if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Red or purple gums
  • Bleeding
  • Soreness
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Pain when chewing

As gum disease gets worse, you might notice a change in how your teeth fit together.

How is gum disease diagnosed?

Dr. Ilyabayev reviews your dental records and completes an oral exam, checking your gums for signs of infection like swelling or bleeding. He then measures the pockets around your teeth with a small periodontal probe ruler. Deeper than normal pockets indicates gum disease.

Dr. Ilyabayev also takes digital X-rays. These photos let him see if there’s bone loss and help him determine the best treatment.

What does gum disease care involve?

Bayside Dental Arts offers several types of gum disease care, including:

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing remove plaque from deep beneath your gums. The procedure typically takes two visits and is done under a local anesthetic.

Antibiotic therapy

Dr. Ilyabayev might recommend antibiotic therapy if you have an infection that doesn’t improve with more conservative treatment. He might suggest oral antibiotics or implantable antibiotic beads.

Gum grafting

Gum grafting treats receding gums. During surgery, Dr. Ilyabayev removes a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth and covers your exposed tooth roots. The graft adds tissue to the damaged areas and prevents further recession.

Bone grafting

Dr. Ilyabayev might recommend a bone graft to replace bone lost to gum disease. After placement, the graft triggers the growth of new, healthy bone tissue.
