Are tooth extractions always necessary?

At Bayside Dental Arts: Andrey Ilyabayev, DDS, Dr. Ilyabayev recommends extractions only when absolutely necessary. Most oral health problems, including minor cavities and infected tooth pulp, improve with less invasive, nonsurgical treatments.

Before suggesting extractions, Dr. Ilyabayev exhausts all other treatment options. To ensure a comfortable treatment experience, he offers several types of pain-free dentistry, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation.

Why would someone need extractions?

Dr. Ilyabayev might recommend extractions if you have:

  • Severe gum disease
  • Infected tooth pulp
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Fractured tooth

You might need extractions after an injury, like a blow to the mouth. For example, Dr. Ilyabayev might extract a loosened permanent tooth and replace it with a fixed bridge.

Are there different types of extractions?

Dr. Ilyabayev offers a few types of extractions, including:

Simple extractions

During a simple extraction, Dr. Ilyabayev uses dental forceps to loosen your tooth and carefully remove it. He then places stitches to promote healing and packs the empty socket with gauze.

Surgical extractions

During a surgical extraction, Dr. Ilyabayev makes small incisions in your gums to access an impacted tooth. He splits the tooth into several pieces and uses dental forceps to remove them. Dr. Ilyabayev then places stitches and packs your tooth socket with gauze.

How do I prepare for extractions?

Dr. Ilyabayev reviews your dental records and completes an oral exam, checking your affected teeth and surrounding gums. He also orders a series of digital X-rays to assess your bone levels and determine the extent of the damage.

Let Dr. Ilyabayev know about your medications, supplements, and vitamins. Certain drugs, like blood thinners, can interfere with sedation, so he must be aware.

What is recovery like after tooth extractions?

After tooth extractions, it’s normal to experience bleeding, swelling, and mild discomfort. Dr. Ilyabayev provides instructions to manage your healing. During your recovery:

  • Keep the extraction site clean
  • Take your medication as prescribed
  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least 72 hours (three full days)
  • Don’t drink through a straw

A week after surgery, you return to Bayside Dental Arts. Dr. Ilyabayev completes an oral exam to ensure that you’re healing properly.
