Both dentures and dental implants replace missing permanent teeth, but they aren’t the same.
Dental implants are titanium posts inserted into your empty tooth sockets. After placement, they integrate with your bone and provide a base (an artificial tooth root) for crowns, fixed bridges, and fixed or removable dentures.
Dentures also replace missing teeth but rest on top of your gums instead of connecting to dental implants. They’re more affordable and don’t require surgery.
Bayside Dental Arts: Andrey Ilyabayev, DDS, offers several types of dentures, including:
Dr. Ilyabayev will recommend partial dentures if you’re missing two or three teeth. Partial dentures resemble orthodontic retainers, with several false teeth and a metal frame. The frame connects to small clasps Dr. Ilyabayev bonds to your existing teeth.
Complete dentures replace all the teeth in your upper or lower dental arch. These dentures rest comfortably on top of your gums. You apply denture glue before putting them in to keep them from moving around.
Implant-supported dentures look like complete dentures. The difference is they attach to dental implants –– titanium screws inserted into your empty tooth sockets. Implant-supported dentures function like your natural teeth and usually last longer than traditional complete or partial dentures.
Getting dentures at Bayside Dental Arts: Andrey Ilyabayev, DDS, takes several weeks or months, depending on the type you choose.
Dr. Ilyabayev takes intraoral scans of your teeth and jaws and sends them to a denture lab. Technicians at the lab create custom dentures designed to restore your smile and chewing and biting abilities. When your dentures are finished, you return to Bayside Dental Arts several weeks later to try them on. Dr. Ilyabayev makes adjustments and provides care instructions.
Getting implant-supported dentures is very similar, the difference being that you undergo an implant-placement procedure first.
During implant placement, Dr. Ilyabayev inserts small titanium screws into your empty tooth sockets. After the implants finish fusing with your jaw, you return to Bayside Dental Arts. Dr. Ilyabeyev takes intraoral scans and sends them to a denture lab that creates custom implant appliances.
